My passion
One of my passions has been, for many years, to help parents start rethinking college for homeschool families — questioning the supposed “need” for our kids to follow the traditional college path. That conviction has only grown stronger in recent years as I’ve watched the level of indoctrination in higher education rise at staggering rates. But I digress.
One reason I’m passionate about this is because moms really stress about jumping through all the hoops trying to get their kids “college-ready” instead of just being able to enjoy the process of being home and allowing their kids to learn in more natural way.
What is education
Life is learning. Reading is learning. Having discussions is learning. Experiencing is learning. When our days are crowded out by subjects, we miss this much bigger picture of what it means to educate. Relax. I’ve been saying it for years!
If your child is headed toward a STEM career, you’ll know it and you won’t be able to stop him.
Wrong measure
Secondly, it frustrates me that we treat academics as the measure of intellect. I have lots of kids who frankly, aren’t super academically bent. But they are smart. They get praised from their employers for being the kind of people who know what to do, do it with joy and have a natural disposition for being good at their jobs. They stand out.
They have gifts of intellect that lie in other places besides math or science. They love life and they love to learn. But it doesn’t look like scoring high on a standardized test. And I love it. We need to acknowledge that intellect has many faces.
Too many opportunities
And lastly, as a mom who figured out the many ways to monetize passions online, it makes me feel almost bad for kids who are pushed into a 4-year degree, get behind the curve ball, leave with a mountain of debt, then have incomes capped by working for other people.
I know a homeschooling mom in Canada making millions with her online business. That’s not “pie in the sky” anymore. We need to wake up to this reality and show our kids the incredible opportunities to earn from home.
We need to stop accepting that a one income family has to struggle. There are too many options for that!
Follow me for videos
Since blogging has apparently become a lesser popular way to consume information with our short attention spans, I have taken these passions I’ve mentioned here and started a TikTok account.
If you’d like to follow me there where I post shorter, byte-sized information, you can find me HERE.
Let me know if you’re still struggling with this tension! I’d love to hear from you and know what you want to hear more of.
